Popular Residents group ACORN had a wonderful outing to South Lakes Zoo last weekend which was a roaring success. Grandparents, parents, children and families had a wonderful day out at this magical place, subsidised by the Big Lottery Fund.
Lions, Tigers, Hippos, Zebras and many many others were all on show but the main attraction for me was the joy which these animals and birds brought to the faces of our residents the very young and elderly.
ACORN was founded in 2011 from an already established Neighbourhood Watch Group and has gone from strength to strength. We work alongside DCC, livin. Police, The Big Lottery fund and other agencies to provide experiences which otherwise residents may not be able to access.
Since its inception ACORN has sought to encourage other groups to follow its lead providing experiences such as pantomime trips petting zoos and Halloween parties to bring people together forming lasting relationships in our communities.
There are a few places left for our forthcoming trip to Windermere on June 16th and Scarborough on July 21st please contact me on 01325 321471 for details.
ACORN realise how expensive it can be to entertain children over the school holidays and have organised a Fun Day for August 11th in which most of the attractions are free. We look forward to seeing you there! Anyone wishing to volunteer to oversee events would be especially welcome.
I am very proud of my community and the many achievements and problems we have solved together, not least the flower tub project which has made such a fantastic difference to our environment.
Please feel free to come along to our monthly meeting on June 12th. Have a cuppa and help us plan the future of our neighbourhood and town. Free Tea Coffee and biscuits. Talk to your councillors about anything which is concerning you and meet your neighbours in a great setting at Newton Aycliffe Phoenix Club 5.30pm for kiddies and 6pm for adults.
