Fabulous ACORN Community Association and friends set off for a seaside adventure to Scarborough at the weekend and what a scorcher it was. With temperatures reaching Costa Del Sol levels the town sparkled in the August sunshine.
As we disembarked the coach some headed for the beach, others made for the shops and a few headed for the cafes for brunch. Shopping for curiosities is my favourite pastime with frequent stops to enjoy a shandy or two as a relief from the ever-present sunshine.
Lovely way to meet friends old and new over a cup of tea in the beachfront bars, people watching as the multitude of tourists promenaded along the sea front exploring shops and attractions seeking sunglasses, hats, bucket and spades and games arcades.
Time for lunch and, whilst some headed for Fish and Chip restaurants, we discovered a delightful restaurant providing Japanese and Thai food which made a change from our normal fare. Delicious!
Of course, there is never enough time to explore everything on our little adventures and Scarborough is no exception with its magnificent Peasholme Park, funfair and array of small shops selling everything from fashion to an ever-popular joke shop.
Newton Aycliffe is a lovely town with fantastic parks and flower displays, which we all enjoy, but ACORN have, for many years, been providing subsidised coach trips to popular places across the north.
ACORN are based in Newton Aycliffe, but encourage residents young, elderly, single and families from across Great Aycliffe to join us on our adventures.
If you would like to join us, we have meetings every month, but August, on the second Thursday of every month at 6pm in the upstairs lounge of the Phoenix Club where we discuss local issues and destinations for our trips.
Our next adventure is to Grassington, which is the village featured in the popular ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ TV series, on Saturday 21st September, for a 1940s themed event.
Please remember though, we are a charity, and we subsidise our trips so try to pay promptly, all seats £8. We still have a few seats vacant; to book contact Ken or Elaine on 01325 321471.
