A group for young parents is held at Chester-le-Street One Point Hub every Friday.
Ruby Singh from New College Durham has just been invited back to the group to do a session covering Indian culture for both parents and children to enjoy.
Lauren Keith, senior family worker, said: “We consult with the young parents regularly to make sure the sessions are offering exactly what they are interested in. We have had health related sessions such as weaning and mini health MOTs, employability sessions and trips.
“I organised this session as Ruby proved popular when she visited us on a previous occasion to show us some Indian cookery.
“The young parents asked for her to come back and this time they had the opportunity to experience wearing saris, henna and jewel hand art and Indian dancing.”
Lisa Gordon and her daughter Kaisey (13 months) enjoyed the session together.
Lisa said: “I’ve been attending the group since before Kaisey was born and I really love coming along, sometimes we do things together and some sessions have a crèche where Kaisey can mix with other children and I get a couple of hours break.
“As well as this group I have also attended weaning, baby massage and family nurturing courses and have found that the family workers offer great support in all areas of life.”
Young Parents or parents to be are invited to the Durham County Council run One Point Centre, Burns Green, DH3 3QH, to join in the fun between 9.30am and 11.30am.
