On the 21st June 2022, Woodham Academy lost one of their own. Ted Sanderson arrived at school that Tuesday morning, but didn’t arrive home. However, Ted has left a lasting legacy which resonates through the school, in particular within his year group, current year 10. It was a pleasure to introduce ‘Bow Tie Day’ to Woodham Academy this year. The day marked the anniversary of Ted’s passing, and it is befitting that all the year 10 students chose to wear a bow tie to remember Ted’s somewhat quirky personality. Mr Bell, Headteacher, clearly remembers a conversation he had with Ted when he was in year 7. “I’ve decided to wear my bow tie today sir, instead of my normal school tie. Don’t I look smart?” “Yes you do Ted, but the school tie will have to go on so your uniform is correct” “OK sir, but it was worth a try!”.
It was a pleasure to host members of Ted’s family, arriving to school to see Ted’s year group resplendent in bright neck wear. They proudly took their place on his commemorative bench, surrounded by his friends from school. In addition, families donated to two linked charities.
The Great North Air Ambulance were quickly on scene that morning, and Ted was then taken to James Cook Hospital. All monies raised will be split between these charities. Any further contributions would be gratefully received at:

Newton Aycliffe should be so proud of its young people and families.
