After organising a successful Pig Racing Night, Aycliffe Inner Wheel club member Margaret Gent introduced another novel fundraising event with a Chicken Race.
I hasten to add that on both occasions no live animals were used – the six pigs were clockwork and were wound up and placed on the table after bets were taken to see which pig passed the winning line first.
Similarly the toy chickens, on a long stick each had a “jockey” who moved up a square nearer the winning line with the roll of dice.
It was good fun with each of the six chickens in the race sponsored. The betting was intense as punters spent as much as £2 a race!
The evening was mainly about enjoying the fabulous food prepared by the ladies and enjoying the company of fellow racegoers.
