I hope everyone has had a good week and you all are well. Thankfully all my rescue hedgehogs are doing OK, sometimes stress of captivity can cause illness but if I release before the time is right and all the work I have done, these precious souls lives will be lost, there is no food, no dry nesting material and the corvids are out looking for food and the cold is also a killer too.
Last week I mentioned Rana, Tilly and Holly, they have all needed some extra attention, Rana and Tilly have had to be support fed but not for long, we had a particularly windy night which made them frightened to leave their blankets to eat, but their weight is nice and stable. Holly (pictured) needed some medication, which hasn’t finished yet, because she has been experiencing tummy pains but she will be fine as they all will be. Holly has been happier, even smiling and showing her little teeth at me, she deserves the best, they all do. These mammals are everyone’s garden friend, the irony is they eat your garden pests only to become unwell themselves and sometimes they die. Us rescuers work very hard to reverse any parasite damage and also any injuries they sustain too.
I am so pleased I can play my part in the battle to get these mammals off the red list for extinction, I do accept that at the moment my days are very busy starting at 6, to clean and freshen their beds and food, there is a lot of washing for them because I don’t use newspapers or straw, I use blankets and vet beds with puppy pads, this is done twice daily but every evening it’s time for medication and weights to be recorded, they are well cared for and every evening they all come out and, if they want to, they can have a walk around the kitchen, sometimes they swim in the bath too. They are very well behaved.
I am also very grateful to everyone who helps me, either by making donations or supporting me with my raffle and fundraising, Daniel of the Olive Garden has yet again contributed to the Easter Raffle, I have lots to offer thanks to, June, Valerie, Wendy, Mandy, Donella and Wally of Grannies Choice for their help and their kindness towards me, John and his wife, Neil and Caz, also to Paul and all of the staff of the Newton News for publishing my little article.
We will be holding our fundraising event at Neville Parade Community Centre on Saturday 11th February, 11am-2pm, please come and see what is on offer, all proceeds go to these beautiful little hogs, food, medication and beautiful houses and comfy warm beds, you never know you may even find some lovely Valentine’s cards and gifts.
Thank you all.
