Consett Lions 2 v Heighington U11 1
Today’s top of the table clash was a great advertisement for U11 grassroots football. Heighington went into the match knowing it was going to be a tough morning but put on a display they can be extremely proud of. The boys took the game to Consett from the very first whistle and did not deserve to be 2-0 down at half time after Will Farrow hit the woodwork from distance and a solid defensive first half – it’s a funny old game.
However, the second half was a different story – Mathis Gordon absolutely shone in a CB role which he dislikes; he did a job very well for his team today, Isaac Morgan had a remarkable game at RB with some great passing to the wings from defence.
James was fantastic at LB, eye of the tiger as always and Lucas was lively and threatened all morning in various positions, linking well with Bruno who smashed in a goal that any striker would be proud of.
Jamie played like a trojan after coming off injured in the first half and an in form Jonah was formidable in midfield and defence.
Jack and Will were our engines today and a commanding performance from Matty in goal showed we can cut it with the best, arguably our best half of football I’ve seen from this team this season although the result wasn’t to be – we didn’t lose today, we ran out of time.
MOTM: Matty Brown, not really a busy morning for him but commanded his box well and a significant improvement in calling for the ball. Came out to collect the ball well and his goal kicks were a great outlet for us under pressure. We could certainly hear him from the sidelines.
Well done to everyone involved, ref, both sets of parents and coaches. Many thanks to our hosts Consett who are a great little well drilled side and deserve to be top of our division. Great stuff guys.
Many thanks to Sash Hardware for our fantastic match day kits and sponsorship.
