A Week at the Seaside with Lighthouse Keeper, Mr Grinling
Some of our youngest children at Walworth School have been having a fascinating time looking at a Seaside theme in the run up to the Summer Holiday. They have been looking at such things as how dress has changed on the beach, children`s entertainment through time, such as Punch and Judy, the various treats throughout history for children such as ice cream, making their own with a variety of flavours, the seaside past and present, all in the comfort of their newly created seaside outdoor base.
One favourite element for the children was good “old fish and chips”. In practical lessons they used a variety of art techniques to make all the elements associated with a traditional seaside fish shop. They made a menu from the “fish shop” out of many different materials including sponge chips and salt dough pies. Hook the duck was very popular and, big news, most of the children actually could book a holiday at the school travel agent, obviously taking Government quarantine regulations into consideration?????? The children enthused over designing a picnic, especially when eating the menu, they created. David the caretaker made a fantastic two metre lighthouse alongside a rowing boat to Celebrate “The Lighthouse Keeper`s Lunch complete with zip wire. The children`s faces clearly showed how they marvelled the “Seaside” at school calling it “amazing”, “great”, “fun” and “fantastic”.
Head Teacher Mr Peter Wallbanks said, ” it was really wonderful to see how interested the children were in setting up the all the aspects. Their cooperation within the tasks was very pleasing to see among young children. Happy smiling faces is what we want to see in school and this project provided us with many on a daily basis. Walworth would also like to thank Mike`s fish shop from the Town in supporting us with materials to set up the fish shop and their excellent fish and chips for all the children, and Denty`s shop from Shildon in providing the whole school with caps for sun protection, without such kindness the effect would not have been the same”.
