Dear Sir,
Politics and life have a great deal in common, both are defined by character and personal values and a willingness to accept responsibility for your actions. You may have no interest in politics, but the reality is every part of your life is either controlled or influenced by politics in general and specifically by the decisions made by those elected to serve in public office. The quality of those decisions is often defined by the people who make them.
As a very famous and successful politician once said ‘’Government is instituted for the common good; for the protection, safety and prosperity and happiness not for profit, honour or private interest of any one man, family, political party or class of men’’. So ideally those who seek to enter the political arena do so because they believe they have the necessary character and life experience to make a difference.
My decision to stand for election as an Independent Candidate in the Neville Ward comes out of a desire to work alongside like minded individuals and make a real difference in the community. My semi retirement has provided an opportunity and the freedom necessary to commit my time and energy to dealing with the challenges ahead for us all. Both life and career experience, along with extensive vocational and academic qualifications gained over many years, have provided me with a solid foundation and the necessary management and interpersonal skills and abilities to fulfil the role of councillor.
The only platform and promise I will ever make are the two things I can guarantee to keep, regardless. My platform is service to the electorate and the best interests of the community as a whole. My one and only promise to you is to always work to the best of my ability when dealing with the issues at hand.
With raised expectations comes the responsibility to step up and deliver on the promises made. I have made you one promise and I’m asking you to trust me, and give me the opportunity to prove I’m a man of my word.
Phillip Hawkins
