People across County Durham are being encouraged to take Time to Talk and improve their mental health and wellbeing this week.

Durham County Council is supporting national Time to Talk Day on Thursday, 6 February with a series of events.

Led by the Time to Change campaign, the day was set up to encourage people to break the silence around mental health.

Free drop-in events around County Durham on Thursday include:

  • Pop-up choir – A flash-mob style event which anyone can join regardless of singing ability – 10.30am to 1.30pm at Durham Town Hall.
  • ManHealth community event – 7.30pm to 10.30pm at Tudhoe Community Centre, Spennymoor
  • Stamp it Out – 1pm to 7pm at North Road Methodist Church, Durham
  • Upper Teesdale Agricultural Support Services (UTASS) Youth Project – 6pm to 9pm at UTASS Office, Chapel Row, Middleton-in-Teesdale
  • Wellbeing for Life tea and talk – 10am to 4m at Clayport Library
  • Time to Talk, Time to Share – 10am to 2pm at Blackhall Community Centre

Cllr Lucy Hovvels MBE, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for adult and health services, said: “Talking about our mental health increases our understanding and helps to combat the stigma that is still so often associated with it.

“There are lots of opportunities across to meet up and share experiences across County Durham during Time to Talk Day, but I’d emphasise that this isn’t just about one day a year – it’s incredibly important that we continue the conversation all-year round.”

People are also encouraged to give their views on mental health and wellbeing by completing an online survey, which has been set up to find out more about attitudes to mental health in County Durham.
