I would like to say “WELL DONE NEWTON AYCLIFFE” after placing an appeal in the Newton News I have received 1071 knitted vests, donated by local residents for the ‘Fish and Chip Babies Appeal’.
Please do not knit any more jumpers at the moment!
Please, if you are able, knit ‘Blankets for Africa’ and drop the finished goods off at the Youth Centre (opposite Tesco), between 9.00am and 4pm, or ring me on 01325 308094, mobile 07967 901477 anytime to arrange collection.
Thank you for all the letters of appreciation from knitters who have written thanking me for setting up this project.
If any person would like to join a knitting group that I intend to set up following on from the enthusiastic comments, details will follow in the Newton News shortly.
We have a lot of Children’s groups in this country who could also benefit from small knitted articles to keep them warm.
The pattern is as follows:
Use double knitting wool with 4mm (size 8) needles.
Squares
:
Cast on 40 stitches, garter stitch for approximately 80 rows (i.e. knit each row).
The square should measure 8″ or 20cm cast off.
Use a variety of colours (avoid white) for the different squares and join together.
The finished blanket (child size) is made up of 48 squares (6×8)
Strips:
Alternatively knit in garter stitch strips of colours equivalent to 8 squares (times six).
If you would like to finish off the blanket by crocheting a border using double/treble stitching this would be acceptable.
Crocheted blankets:
For those who prefer crocheting, either in small pieces joined together or one big square measuring 65″ they will be very acceptable also.
