Club stalwart Peter Ryans, was duly elected as the first ever Director of Rugby for Newton Aycliffe Rugby Club. A prestigious new post set up by the club’s recently reformed committee. He was recently recognised as one of the regions best volunteers in rugby at an awards ceremony organised by the RFU.
This new post will allow Peter to manage all members to improve areas in the development of the club. Peter has already started a new initiative to involve local junior schools in Newton Aycliffe to encourage pupils to learn the basics of the game. His team of newly qualified coaches have already had successful engagements at Woodham Burn and other junior schools are about to start this partnership, and the feedback from the schools has been fantastic, with several children showing early promise in taking up the sport at Junior level. Eventually it is hoped these young players in the making will be the first to start training at the club and develop teams as early as the coming new season.
At senior level preseason training has already started at Moore Lane.
The fixtures are already out for the coming season in the Durham and Northumberland League Division 3. The challenge has been set to improve on last seasons league position of 5th place.
Throughout the months of July and August the club would like to invite any males residing in Newton Aycliffe, over 17 years old, no experience necessary, to come and try the game and train with the current players.
Sadly the club does not offer coaching for ladies but hopefully in the near future this could happen. As there are other clubs in South West Durham area that have ladies teams.
Experienced players are also welcome to join Aycliffe Rugby and see for themselves the comradery that exists within the club.
Newton Aycliffe RUFC are based at Newton Aycliffe Sports Club and all players, as members of NASC, enjoy the hospitality and facilities available at Moore Lane.
Senior preseason training is currently running on Thursday evenings at 7.00pm and Saturday afternoons at 1.00pm.
