Visitors to this year’s Cricket World Cup in County Durham are being welcomed by a 3D cricket-inspired floral display.
Durham welcomes the Cricket World Cup today (Friday, 28 June), with South Africa taking on Sri Lanka.
To mark its hosting role, Durham is showing off its green fingers to fans, to celebrate the occasion.
A blooming installation featuring a wicket and a bouncing ball has been set up by Durham County Council’s clean and green team. The floral display can be seen outside Durham County Cricket Club, in Chester-le-Street.
It will remain in full bloom throughout the sporting celebrations, with two more world cup games hosted by the region in July.
Cllr Simon Henig, Leader of Durham County Council, said: “Cricket World Cup fever has officially arrived in County Durham. Our budding displays have become an important part of our county’s scenery, and this will showcase not only our role as hosts of the World Cup, but our ability to create incredible green displays.
“The installation will be a permanent feature going forward, continuing to welcome people to the cricket ground.”
Oliver Sherratt, head of environment at Durham County Council said: “Our clean and green team has done a great job in coming up with an inventive, fun installation celebrating all things cricket.”
“This will also be one of the many floral displays the Northumbria In Bloom judges will see when judging the town in July.”
Cllr Brian Stephens, Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and local partnerships, said: “This unique display celebrates the incredible sporting events taking place in our county. Visitors to the world cup can look forward to a great atmosphere, and well done to the clean and green team for adding to the excitement.”
