A young 12 year old ice hockey star in the making, Gregor Mills, from Newton Aycliffe, has spent the Easter break playing against the top players in Europe in a tournament in Sweden. Gregor was asked to play for Icelandic team, Skautafelag Akureyrar at the U14 Rosvalla Gastrabud U14 Cup Tournament which was held over 3 days in Nyköping, Sweden.
Teams were present from across Europe, including Sweden, Finland and Germany. Twenty teams took part and a total of 240 players. Gregor was the only English player there and one of the youngest players, with the majority being 14 and 15 years old. Gregor scored six points in the seven games played and was joint 12th overall in the points standings. Whilst in Sweden he also played in a friendly game in Stockholm scoring a further 2 points.
The trip was an amazing experience for him and despite some language barriers he has made firm friends for life, and learned a little Icelandic. He and his family have been invited to visit Iceland to train and to see the sights! Gregor has also had further invites to train and to play for teams in North America and Finland and he hopes to continue to progress in the sport he loves. He is currently the top scorer in the English ice hockey league for his age group.
