UTC South Durham, located on the Aycliffe Business Park, opened in September 2016 and the first cohort of students have received their A-level and Level 3 results today.
UTC South Durham students have set themselves up for the future with a solid foundation in technical education and workplace experiences, which make them highly employable.
Principal, Tom Dower, said “We are incredibly proud of all our students here at the UTC and their achievements over the last two years. The purpose of the UTC is to prepare young people for the world of work and it is great to see them moving on to careers in exciting companies through apprenticeship schemes or on to excellent university courses.
“It’s very rewarding to know that we have been an important part of their career journey. Our students experience a blend of academic courses, technical education and workplace experience which makes them very employable. That makes them attractive to local, regional and global employers, which is what makes the UTC education so unique”.
Student destinations include university courses in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Maths and Aerospace Engineering. Students have been successful in landing higher and advanced apprenticeships in a wide range of specialist areas, such as mechanical engineering, graphic design, fabrication, interior design and finance.
Katie Flanagan, Business Manager at Aycliffe Fabrications said, “As an industry partner of the UTC we have worked closely with them to find the right apprentice who has the technical skills and positive attitude we need, and Matthew was just the right fit.”
When talking about the business relationship that Aycliffe Fabrications has with the UTC, Katie went on to say, “The UTC has listened to our requirements as a small business and adapted how they teach their students to fit well in companies such as ours and we are excited to have Matthew working with us on his apprenticeship programme.”
