DANGERS
SLUG PELLETS KILL HOGS – use organic.
STRIMMERS/MOWERS – always check for hogs sleeping/nesting in long grass/shrubs beforehand.
NETTING – at least 6″ from the ground checking daily just in case of a hog getting tangled.
PONDS/WATER FEATURES – make sure you have a ramp/step stones for hogs to climb out with water levels being kept up so they can still climb out.
BONFIRES – check garden pile before setting alight.
NESTS – check old compost bags/heaps before use of garden fork or removing bag.
DOGS – be careful each evening if you have a dog when you know hogs pass through your garden. If your dog picks up a hog, try to get it checked out by a vet.
ROADS – be vigilant whilst driving.
DRAINS/HOLES – make sure they are covered. Hedgehogs may become trapped and unable to climb out. They may injure themselves in the process and if not rescued die a slow and painful death
WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A SICK/INJURED HOG
Injuries – take to a vet asap
Hogs out during the day may need help (sitting in one place for a lengthy period, wobbling but not when collecting nesting materials).
WHAT TO FEED A HEDGEHOG
Shallow bowl of fresh water
Dry cat biscuits and meat
DO NOT give milk as hogs are lactose intolerant
ONLY GIVE a few dried mealworms mixed in with food (a whole diet of mealworms causes calcium deficiency)
