St John’s School & Sixth Form College are very fortunate to have been involved in Durham University’s Lindisfarne Gospels outreach programme for secondary schools. This programme aims to bring an introduction and understanding of the Gospels’ significant religious and cultural importance over the last 1300 years to young people.
The school recently hosted a highly successful series of workshops by the Durham University Learning Team, one of which focused on the artist scribe, Eadfrith who was involved in producing the Gospels. The students enjoyed trying out various artistic techniques available at that time. They also looked at how the culture of the time influenced and was reflected in Eadfrith’s work.
At lunchtime over 200 Year 8 students enjoyed a special assembly. The students all enjoyed the lively and imaginative presentations and we are grateful to Jane Crawford of Daisy Arts who arranged the visit.
A group of Year 7 students worked with Mr Nugent, an art teacher at St John’s, to create an impressive sculpture inspired by the Lindisfarne Gospels.
It is to be exhibited in the McGuinness Gallery at Bishop Auckland Town Hall as part of FebFest. The students attended the Official Opening on Monday 11th February.
