Year 3 at St. Mary’s primary in Newton Aycliffe went to Tesco to do a Farm to Fork trail on Wednesday, 27th September. A kind man called Richard Pace. First he took us to the training room we all got a bib and a clipboard to start our investigations.
Our investigations started at the Fruit and Vegetable aisle, we had to record what colour the fruit or vegetable was and the country it came from. E.g. Yellow lemons came from Madagascar. We also had to comment on whether we had tried the food or not.
Then we visited the fish counter, it smelt very strange! We saw fish’s gills open, which looked disgusting. Richard also showed us the fishes tongue, it was silver. We found out the countries where all the different fish came from, which was interesting. We even explored fish that were still alive!
After that we went to the bakery to learn about the bread. I round out that there are 3 stages in making bread. Richard told us the yeast smelt of smelly socks! I thought it smelt worse than n smelly socks! We learnt how much bread was sold every day in Tesco- which was a lot!
When we finished at the bakery, we went to the freezer store. As you can imagine it was extremely cold (-24oc). How cold is that? It felt so cold it was like being in Antarctica!
Once we had gone back into the freezers, we went back to the training room, and tried lots of different breads, some cheeses and different fruit, such as candy floss grapes and greengages.
Here are some pupil comments
“My favourite part of the day was tasting the food, especially the salt and pepper bread.”
“Although the freezers were cold, I loved seeing what was stored there.”
“Richard was great and I hope to visit Tesco again.”
A big thank you goes to Richard and to our local Tesco Store for supporting us in our Topic work learning where food comes form. We are hoping to visit again in the summer term, when we will be exploring healthy eating!
