To coincide with an upcoming National competition, Athena Sports Academy gymnasts welcomed parents and local Councillor Kate Hopper to spectate their final warm-up event before making the trip to Saltney, Chester. Eleven partnerships dazzled the audience with their amazing Acro routines, leaving the competing gymnasts buzzing with excitement and expectation! Athena have been in their new hall at the Leisure Centre just over a year and had a special sprung floor installed just 9 months ago thanks to support from County Councillors’ neighbourhood budget funding! They had a Disco to celebrate the 1st year anniversary last month and held a competition practice last Thursday, attended by relatives, which was really spectacular. The club had 2 spotting rigs installed last month, another piece of equipment which means the club can grow and progress. This was funded by County Durham Community Foundation who recognised Athena’s phenomenal growth to 280 registered members. Thanks to the backing of Aycliffe councillors Athena has progressed into a very successful club, since moving to their designated facility in Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre, which has provided a much-needed home to all involved. By offering many new recreational sessions catering for ages 18 months to 18 years, they have seen the number of gymnasts increase by over 40%
