Northern Powergrid, the company responsible for the power network which keeps the kettles boiling and the phones charging for 3.9 million homes and businesses across the region, is recruiting a new generation of engineers.
The electricity distribution company is looking for up to 30 people to join its 2017 Graduate and Technical Staff Trainee Engineer Programme and Trainee Engineer (Foundation Degree) Programme.
The vacancies form part of the company’s on-going commitment to recruit, train and develop the people needed to deliver its £3 billion, eight year investment programme, which started in 2015.
The Trainee Engineer (Foundation Degree) Programme is a three-year tailored programme which includes a Northern Powergrid-funded foundation Degree in Electrical Power Engineering undertaken during the first two years. In addition, the trainee engineer will gain a broad range of experience through placements across Northern Powergrid’s business as well as completing formal courses.
The two-year Graduate and Technical Staff Trainee Engineer Programme offers those with a degree in engineering, or an HNC/HND or equivalent in electrical engineering backed up with an industry based background, training and development to help progress their career. These trainees spend 18 months learning about all the engineering activities in an electricity distribution company, from operations to design and asset management, before completing an extended placement in their chosen specialism. The programme ensures that they are fully trained to take up a suitable role within Northern Powergrid on completion of their programme.
Karen Weatherburn, Director of Human Resources at Northern Powergrid, said: “As part of our eight year business we’re delivering a £3 billion investment programme to manage and improve the region’s power network, keeping the electricity flowing for our 8 million customers.
“We want to train a new generation of engineers to be part of this exciting and important journey for our business and our customers. They will strengthen our existing team of professional engineers and help ensure we continue to have a workforce ready to deliver now and in the future.”
