On Wednesday 28th November, Woodham Academy held the final of their Year 9 Apprenticeship Awareness Challenge, which saw the six teams compete for the winning title.  Over nine weeks the Year 9 students have been mentored by one of six major companies on the Business Park – 3M, Stiller Warehouse and Distribution Ltd, Ebac, Finley Structures, Palram and Tallent Automotive Ltd.  Students have visited the company and have participated in workshops led by current and ex-apprentices.

The challenge brief encouraged students to look at entry routes into apprenticeships, qualification levels, working/training hours, pay and career progression.  Students presented their findings to an audience of business leaders, staff, parents and other students and the presentations were judged according to the challenge brief.  The judging panel, comprising of Ann Cant (Vice-chair of Governors), Steve Robson (GAMP) and Gary Chaplain (Enterprise Coordinator at Durham County Council), had a tough decision to make, as all the students performed exceptionally well.  The winning group was 9CT who had worked with Finley Structures, closely followed by 9PD with Ebac.

‘The project was a great way for students to get hands on experience of working life with the manufacturing and engineering sector.  The experience was enjoyed by all participants and their knowledge of possible post 16 pathways has broadened.‘ said Mr Neil Spoor, Head of Year 9.
