Woodham Golf Course received the good news, on Tuesday this week, that their planning application for 50 houses on the course has been approved by Durham County Council.
It has taken two years to convince the planners this scheme was right for our town. The previous application included many more houses and a new Hotel which the new owners Halls Construction of Newton Aycliffe asked to amend.
They didn’t want a massive housing scheme and applied for a more modest development which would allow them to invest money on the golf course.
Director Neville Hall told Newton News he was very pleased and thanked local councillors for their support. Mike Dixon proposed the outline planning application be approved and John Clare was the seconder and it was agreed unanimously.
“I want to thank Newton News and everyone in the community who supported us and look forward to proceeding with the development as soon as the detailed planning is approved. This will secure the future of the town’s golf course and if in the future there is a demand we will consider building a hotel.”
Part of the agreement is to donate the adjacent Agnew Wood to the Town Council and to provide a circular walk around the golf course. The owners are to continue with their charitable community work and encouraging young people and ladies to take up golf with free offers.
Halls hope to commence the scheme next year which will first mean building a new access road with the whole project expecting to take two years to complete.
We wish to congratulate the Halls on finally obtaining permission for their plans. The unanimous approval for their honest and worthwhile scheme should give them encouragement and we wish them success in all their endeavours.

Neville-Hall
