Wheelchair-bound Michael Dalton (51), has been battling both spina bifida and kidney failure since the day he was born. But next month, he’s planning a marathon charity cycle ride to benefit other kidney patients in the region – though the only bike he’s ever ridden was a three-wheel trike and that was over 40 years ago . . .
His waking day in a wheelchair, will attempt to ride over 26 miles on a static pedal cycle at the Lifestyle Fitness Suite in the town’s Leisure Centre.
“It’s true that the last bicycle I rode was a trike when I was only ten years old and that I’ve never actually ridden a two-wheel bike at all but I’ve already started training and am determined to put up a good show,” said Michael, pictured, this week.
A well-known local Councillor, Rotarian and former Mayor of Great Aycliffe, Michael is putting himself to the test on Sunday, April 17th, when he  will be raising money for the Mayor of Great Aycliffe’s appeal for the Renal unit/Ward 4 of James Cook University Hospital and other local charities. The Mayor this year just happens to be Michael’s 90 year old mother, Mary.
Anyone wishing to sponsor Michael can contact him on 01325 320499 or mobile 07954 290711.
