Greenfield Arts in partnership with Greenfield Community College and funded by GAMP AAP, have been working with students on a new Story Makers project to improve literacy and communication skills in young people.
The project, which uses STEAM qualities, has been devised to be intergenerational and use storytelling as a way to capture the imaginations of the young people involved. The students are currently working with production manager Richard Agar to create mechanical puppets of animals devised from their own imaginary design. These mechanimals will then be brought to life by artist Anne Curtis, who will help children from local primary schools to create stories based on these characters.
The young people will be taking their mechanimals and wonderful stories to local primary schools to present their work and see how they can encourage a love of stories in others. This will then inform the next step of the project which is to create an app for smart phones and tablets, which young people can access to create their own stories. The app will be made up of the various characters and stories and locations so that anybody can pick and choose the elements of a story to create their own. This is a great chance for the students involved to shine and see how they can impact on their wider community.
