The Woodham Academy U14’s and U12’s basketball teams have continued the tradition of basketball success at the school. Both teams won their respective district competitions outright without losing any games and in doing so qualified for the Durham Sport Games’ County Finals.
This was a particularly special achievement for the U14 team which was made up mainly of year 8 students who were competing a year young. Both teams performed creditably at the County Finals, hosted at Durham University’s Maiden Castle sports complex.
The Under 12 team reached the semi final, where they narrowly lost out to the eventual winners, but won bronze medals following a win in the 3rd/4th place play-off game.
The Under 14 team finished runners-up overall after winning all group games in their progression to the final. Woodham Academy has an established history in basketball and has provided more National League players to the Durham Wildcats programme than any other school, as well as consistently having more representatives in North East Regional teams than any other school in County Durham.
Woodham Academy Deputy Headteacher and Durham Wildcats Junior Head Coach, Danny Morgans, has already identified a number of Year 8 students who have been selected for the North East Area Performance Camp and also the Durham Wildcats U14’s National League development programme.
