New Age Kurling is played indoors and is a sport that can be played by everyone regardless of abilities, using a section of a badminton court. The aim of the sport is to attempt to get the majority of stones delivered on the target to win the end and eventually the game. People of all abilities can play as there are aids to help people such as a ramp or pushers. There are 2 major competitions each year, one in May and one in October, which is coming not only to the North East but to County Durham this weekend.
On Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th October, Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre in will be host to the Kurling Club Team Competition and British Open Competition. Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre has been donated free for the weekend by Durham County Council who is sponsoring the competition. Trophies have come from kind donations from Great Aycliffe Town Council and County Councillors from the Newton Aycliffe area. This is the first time a major competition for New Age Kurling has been held in County Durham and teams will be attending on a national basis from Wales, Scotland, South, Midlands, Yorkshire and North England.
The sport of New Age Kurling is going through the process of recognition by Sport England and there is a plea from the National Executive Committee for those clubs/organisations that are playing New Age Kurling or Indoor Kurling that are not registered under Great British Kurling Association (GBKA) to please get in touch with us so that we can include your participation in the bid towards recognising the sport.
