We are sad to record the death of well known local businessman David Thompson, of School Aycliffe who passed away at St. Teresa’s Hospice, Darlington on Thursday 16th April 2015.
David was born in Leicester in 1944 and moved with his parents back to their native Yorkshire where David was educated at Croft School and Eston Technical College.
He qualified as an Engineer and later gained the position of Service Manager at SAB, Aycliffe. Before this company closed David saw a niche in the market and started his own business, Sabre Rail, repairing brakes on railway stock.
The business thrived and now employs over 100 staff. David retired due to ill health in 2007 and the company is now run by his son Stephen.
David was a very nice man, a real gentle person and was much respected by all who met him. He was a keen motor sportsman, played golf and was a member of Newton Aycliffe Rotary Club who paid homage to his memory with a silent tribute before their meeting this week..
David was married to Glenys in 1973 and they enjoyed a great life together in recent years travelling. They have a daughter Karen who is married to John, living in Australia. Stephen and his partner Florence have three children Ben, Harriet and Hugo.
The funeral will take place at St. John’s Church, Neasham Road on Monday 27th April at 3pm followed by cremation at Darlington Crematorium.
Glenys wishes to thank everyone for their messages of condolence. “The number of cards received proved to me how much David was loved and this has been some comfort in my loss” said Glenys.
