The Options group based at the Pioneering Care Centre recently attended the Paralympics GB Sports Fest at Durham University, offering them a unique opportunity to discover more about disability sport and inviting them to try it for themselves.
They took part in a range of sports including football, shooting, tennis, rowing, swimming, table tennis and cycling and met triple Paralympic champion Stephen Miller and wheelchair fencing star Gemma Collis.
Sports Fest aims to capture the enthusiasm and excitement sparked by the London 2012 Paralympic Games and the record-breaking success of British Paralympians at Sochi 2014.
Sports Fest North East, hosted by The Graham Sports Centre at Maiden Castle, Durham University, was the fifth event in the series and it marked the first time that the event has come to the region.
The Options group members said they felt inspired by the experience and the event made them think about trying out new sports.
Options is a high quality person-centred service providing a way for disabled people to have more control over their lives and participate more fully in the community in which they live.
Social care workers refer disabled people into the service which offers daily support and opportunities to enable them to achieve their personal goals. Options members develop personal development plans which can include access to education, training, leisure, volunteering and employment.
An Options Social Club which takes place every Thursday from 6pm also within the Pioneering Care Centre is open to all disabled adults and includes hydrotherapy pool sessions, table tennis, bingo and internet access.
