People with experience of researching their family tree are being encouraged to branch out and take up a new course.
The Record Office in Durham is running a new monthly family history session aimed at researchers keen to move past the basics and look at more challenging records such as those dating before 1800 or those less often used for family history such as maps and trade directories. Each session will include a talk and will give participants time to browse the resources available in the research room, possibly even looking up the records of their own ancestors.
Dawn Layland, education and outreach archivist with Durham County Council, said: “Lots of people attending our introductory family history courses have been asking for more so we’ve put together these sessions.
Sessions cost £8 and must be booked in advance by calling 03000 267626. Those interested can also email record.office@durham.gov.uk for further information.
Sessions are taking place between 6pm and 8pm:
Monday, 23 March – electoral rolls, maps and trade directories
Tuesday, 21 April – dating old photographs
Monday, 18 May – tracing ancestors before 1800
And between 10am and noon:
Thursday, 26 March – electoral rolls, maps and trade directories
