Last week a group of year 8 girls from Greenfield Community College visited the Sage Gateshead as part of a “Stemettes” Day, aimed at inspiring young people to enter STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) careers.
The group of enthusiastic girls took part in forensic science classes, website design workshops; Google 3d glasses experiments; 3d printing and flux dance, alongside 300 other young people from across the region. It was a fantastic day, which all the girls enjoyed.
Emma Smith, said “I had had a brilliant day. I loved experimenting with all the different techniques and activities and can’t wait until next year to do it again!”
Greenfield Community College has a thriving STEM club which meets on a Tuesday afterschool, one of a range of extracurricular activities offered here at Greenfield. At the moment the students in STEM are involved in a range of projects including a team taking part in a Vex Robotics competition- they have just competed locally and will soon be competing against schools across the North.
Some of the STEM students have just applied for STEM leaders’ awards, members of the group will visit Sunderland University soon, and in March the group will be attending The Big Bang Fair in Birmingham for the second year running. The group has also been working with Hitachi.
Over the past couple of years, the group has completed lots of different science experiments, taken part in the 4 by 4 challenge, the ‘What If’ project and in designing the King of the Fairies puppet for the Cutting Loose Festival. The rest of this year promises to continue to be busy – well done STEM!
