A glimpse of County Durham’s hidden history is on offer next weekend as dozens of venues open their doors to celebrate Heritage Open Days.
This year, a record 68 attractions in the county will be offering free admission between Thursday, 6 September and Sunday, 9 September.
And many buildings and locations will also be inviting visitors to take a look behind the scenes with special access to areas that are normally closed to the public.
Events and activities include the chance to discover the new home of the George Elmy lifeboat at Seaham, explore Harehope Quarry, which provided the Frosterley Marble used in Durham Cathedral, or take a hard-hat tour of Grade II listed Lartington Hall, which is currently undergoing restoration.
Members of the public can also visit the strong rooms at Durham County Record Office, take a sneak peek at the Mayor’s Chamber at Durham Town Hall, enjoy a walk through Pelaw Woods or learn the history of Durham University’s Colleges.
Heritage Open Days relies heavily on the passion and enthusiasm of community groups and volunteers and many will be on hand to offer information and guided tours at participating venues.
Ros Evans, Durham County Council heritage outreach and learning officer, said: “Each year, Heritage Open Days gets bigger and better and this time around we are pleased to have an additional 22 venues taking part.
“Once again, there really is something for all ages and interests so we would encourage everyone to get out and about and make the most of this fantastic event.”
