St. Clare’s Church was packed with mourners last Friday as hundreds gathered to pay their respects and say goodbye to popular local businessman Johnny Jones.
As a much respected ex-Fireman the local crew gave him a guard of honour as his coffin entered and left the church.
It was as a local character that Johnny will be remembered by so many people in our community. Jean Thompson North East Governor of Rotary International paid a glowing tribute to Johnny for his outstanding service to the community and fellow Rotarian Pat Henderson read an apt piece of poetry.
The eulogy was given by Lay Reader Jan Carr who introduced some amusing anecdotes covering Johnny’s full and inspiring life which took a lad from the pit in Wheatley Hill to the Coldstream Guards, then the RAF, the Fire Service and his own Coach Hire business.
John was noted for his community involvement, generous nature and compassion for people less fortunate. The town has lost one of its pioneers and a good example of dedication and hard work which served as a valuable contribution to the town’s development.
