Newton Aycliffe Rugby Club began their Durham and Northumberland Division 3 campaign with a defeat at home to last season’s relegated team, Whitby. With a number of players unavailable for a variety of reasons, Aycliffe had to change the team around somewhat, but it was still strong.
The game began with both teams trying to get some consistency. Whitby took the lead with a penalty, but Aycliffe then began to apply the pressure. From a tap penalty, Jeff Hodgson forced his way over the line. Luke Tinkler’s conversion from wide out looked like it would be good, but it hit the post. Aycliffe were now on top, but they let Whitby come back into the game and the visitors regained their lead with a try to be 8 – 5 ahead at the break.
Aycliffe began the second half strongly and won a good scrum near the Whitby line, the ball was rapidly shipped out wide and David Judge was able to round the defence to score. Again Tinkler’s difficult kick was struck well; this time it bounced of the crossbar for the 2 points. Whitby’s strong forwards now began to apply the pressure and Aycliffe’s defence became stretched. With 10 minutes to go, a converted try gave Whitby a 3 point lead. Aycliffe fought their way back into opposition territory, but were unable to score. With time running down, Whitby extended their lead to 6 with a penalty and then applied the coup de grace with a third try which denied Aycliffe even a deserved bonus point.
Again, the last 10 minutes proved Aycliffe’s downfall and this result has made the season more difficult, even after only one match. Aycliffe’s next game on 13th September them visit Yarm. Kick-off is 3pm.
