To commemorate W.W.1. the sewing group at St. Mary’s Catholic church in Newton Aycliffe fashioned a large banner to be hung behind the altar. A memorial book for parishioners to inscribe the names of family members who fought in the war was made available and displayed in front of the altar.
Finally a large collection of family memorabilia from W.W.1. was on display including the remains of a badly burned figure of Christ from a crucifix which hung in the Cathedral at Ypres rescued by the Grandfather of parishioner Terry Wise after the Cathedral was destroyed.
The church will be open on Monday August 4th from 10am until 4pm for people to pay their respects and to remember and give thanks to all those who fought and those who made the final sacrifice that we might live in peace.
