On Thursday 26th of June 2014 a fascinating new exhibition will open at The Greenfield Gallery at Greenfield Arts in Newton Aycliffe.
‘Bishop’s Close Street’ will showcase a selection of recently discovered work by County Durham’s most celebrated artist Norman Cornish MBE.
Described as the master of the informal portrait and the unguarded moment, Norman Cornish has been capturing the world around his native Spennymoor in County Durham for almost eight decades. This exhibition at Greenfield will cover the time when he lived in Bishop’s Close Street from the early 1950s until 1967 and includes much work which has previously been unseen.
During this period Norman Cornish created many important pieces including the mural commissioned by Durham County Council (1963) to commemorate the opening of the new County Hall. This particular piece was painted in the church hall at the end of Bishop’s Close Street.
Also included in the exhibition will be a selection of recently discovered sketch books which contain the original drawings of people and places in County Durham and from across the region. They provide a rare and wonderful insight into the preparatory research and development of ideas by Norman Cornish which subsequently appeared in many of his paintings.
Greenfield Arts would like to thank Norman Cornish’s family for organising the exhibition, and Northumbria University Gallery, Durham County Council and Bishop Auckland Town Hall for their support.
Members of the press are invited to view the exhibition on Wednesday June 25th between 1pm and 2-30pm before it opens to the public on Thursday June 26th.
Please contact Greenfield Arts to confirm your attendance.
