The Charity Football Tournament organised by local footballer Dougie Grant, that took place on Sunday 8th June at Shildon Leisure Centre was a massive success. As of Monday 16th June we have raised £1414 for the Charity CLIC Sargent. There will be £1314 on the ‘Just Giving’ page when everything goes through and a further £100 in the form of a cheque paid directly to the Charity.
The event went down well with over 60 players and 50+ spectators showing their support/participation during the day. I would like to say a massive thank you to the players, spectators and the Referee Dave Swindells, who took care of all six matches as other referees were unable to attend. The winners on the day were Team Wilkinson with the wooden spoon going to Team Grant.
My wife Angela and Sophie’s Mam, Paula, played an integral part on the day to help make it hugely successful. They looked after the raffle and took the entry monies off spectators as well as supporting where required during the proceedings.
The raffle was very popular with great prizes from local companies including Newton Press, Deco Engraver’s Tindale, Bishop Auckland Football Club, Shildon Football Club, Happy Valley Chinese, Café Limone Shildon, Dean Walker Physio Shildon, Bay Horse Middridge, Redworth Hall Hotel, TSM Norland Sports, Unique 2 U Bishop Auckland and Maxine’s Restaurant Bannatyne Hotel Darlington. A massive Thank you to all these companies for their generosity in supporting this event, we could not have raised the money we have without this support.
I wanted to put this event together because my 11yr old Goddaughter Sophie Foster, of Shildon, was diagnosed with Leukaemia last year and has had to undergo many hours of Chemotherapy, Lumbar punctures and other medication as well as spending most of the first 6 months having her treatment at the RVI Newcastle. That was when CLIC Sargent started their support of Sophie and her family and they continue to do so during her continuing treatments and difficult times. Sophie is one of the lucky ones to be given the support as the charity can help only 2 in every 3 families. It is heart breaking to see that 1 in 3 families will receive no support at all.
