Last week representatives from the Aycliffe Village local History Society visited Greenfield to share creative writing produced by students to mark the anniversary of World War 1.
The students had been working on the project, organised by Greenfield Arts for students at Greenfield Community College, across different areas of the curriculum. They the project in their art lessons by creating boxes with memorabilia, objects and memories, inspired by the assemblage artists. They then used their artwork as inspiration for creative writing, producing poems remembering the war, and reflective writing about what it must have been like to live at that time.
The history society members were impressed with the students’ work, which will be included in a publication to commemorate the war. Recordings of their poems and their artwork will be on display as part of an exhibition in September.
The students have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to continue a project across different areas of their studies, enhancing and giving value to their learning. Greenfield Arts and staff at Greenfield Community College have worked together with the history society to make this fantastic project possible.
The students will now record their poetry, and transfer their knowledge to their history lessons, considering the war from a local perspective. We look forward to seeing what they come up with next!
