Students and teachers at Woodham Academy were delighted to present their first Year 10 Art exhibition at the academy. The exhibition was held just before the Christmas break to celebrate the success of the current year 10 students who’ve been creating some fantastic artwork since selecting GCSE Art as an option subject at the end of Year 8.
Students exhibited a range of coursework produced for their portraiture project as well as a sample of work from the Nature’s Little Creatures unit.
Staff and parents were overwhelmed by the personal and touching nature of some of the portrait projects in particular. The exhibition also gave students the opportunity to showcase their insect installation inspired by the ceramic artist Anna Collette Hunt whose work they went to visit at Yorkshire Sculpture Park earlier in the year.
The student installation contains over 300 individual insects all hand made by students and assembled as a group to represent Hunt’s swarm of insects rising up in the stairwell. The artist herself gave her seal of approval commenting “Wow how amazing!
They look fantastic” when the work was posted on the department’s Instagram account, which was a great boost for the students. This is not the first time successful contemporary artists and famous people have commented on Woodham Academy students’ work through social media. You can follow Woodham Academy on Twitter @woodhamart or Instagram woodham_art or on the Woodham Art facebook page.
If any parent missed the chance to see the exhibition on the night the work will be on display in the Art gallery until the end of February.
Don’t miss Woodham Academy’s annual Year 11 exhibition later on in the year when you can see students’ own spin on the fantastic Lumière light festival as well as a selection of final pieces produced throughout GCSE and BTEC courses.
