Stephenson Way are celebrating a double sporting success with their football and netball teams picking up medals in their respective Sedgefield School Sports Partnership after school leagues. The school was already pleased at simply being able to enter two teams in each league, with this showcasing the large amount of eager and enthusiastic sportspeople the school has. The fact that two of the teams went on to be successful is an encouraging sign that the school’s increased focus on team sports is paying dividends.
The football league was played over 3 Thursday nights at Greenfield. The team earned their medals the hard way, not topping the league table until after the final game of the season, and even then only doing so via goal difference. Two fantastic performances in the final two games (resounding 4-0 and 7-0 victories) ensured the final league table had Stephenson Way level on points but 5 goals better off on goal difference than their nearest rivals. In the netball league, the A Team took home silver medals for their second placed finish, whilst the B team were close to picking up medals themselves but ultimately finishing in 4th place. With the two teams having only formed several weeks prior to the competition starting, the overall performance of the two netball teams was very encouraging. With future competitions in both netball and football, as well as many other sports, already organised in the New Year, the school is hopeful that there is more sporting success to come.
