St. Francis was known for his love of nature, particularly his love of animals. I think all of us empathise with that! Historians believe he was born over 840 years ago, in either 1181 or 1182, in Assisi which is now part of Italy. St. Francis believed that nature was the mirror of God. He called all creatures his ‘brothers’ and ‘sisters’. There are stories of him preaching to the birds and speaking with wolves. He spread the word of God during the wars of the Christian crusades, dying in Assisi on 3rd October 1226, aged around 44. He was made a saint on 16th July 1228. His feast day is held on 4th October.
Last week, the Year 5’s at St. Francis’ Junior School taught us all about St. Francis, who our school is named after. They made us realise how lucky we are to be named after such an important, special saint. Well done Year 5, after four weeks back at school you have learnt a lot about St. Francis and were so brave delivering our first class assembly this year.
We also celebrated St. Francis’ Day by holding a school disco. The staff and children gathered for our St Francis’ Day Disco. What a great disco it was. The children and staff had an amazing time dancing away and playing some party games. We stopped for a hot dog and juice break before dancing the night away together! It was great to see the children having such a fun time together.
