ACORN Petting Zoo in Newton Aycliffe Town Centre was a huge success on Saturday despite a light rain threatening to curtail the event. The good people of Newton Aycliffe and beyond turned out to support this spectacular free show which entertained everyone who braved the English summer weather.
From little boys and girls to parents and grandparents everyone seemed fascinated with the variety of animals and reptiles on show, including Spotty Dog and Sid the Squirrel posing for photographs. Primarily the aim of the event is to give children a good day out, with a family feel and an opportunity to have a hands-on relationship with animals, from rabbits to donkeys and all kinds of reptiles and insects. With no charge for face painting and balloon modelling parents were happy to queue, and the children were delighted with their spoils.
Retailers reported an increase in takings and interest, particularly in food and drink offers. The event has been popular every year since the beginning of the ACORN group some thirteen years ago.
Sadly, this must be our last event due to funding difficulties, ageing volunteers and changes in legislation. We will miss this event greatly as I feel sure many members of the public will too. We will, however, continue to organise coach trips and meetings for the foreseeable future.
I must thank all who have supported the event over the years from our Town Centre Manager, Trevor Gyllenspetz, Paul Howarth and Aycliffe Radio for their support with background music and promotion through the Newton News. The petting zoos themselves, everyone is a star, Women’s Institute for providing home-made delicacies, Grace Greyhound Rescue, Prickly Haven and Sisters of Support for braving the inclement weather. Town Centre shops for their encouragement and advertising, Newton Aycliffe Residents – who, without their presence we wouldn’t have an event.
Finally, thank you to ACORN committee who put in lots of hard work behind the scenes to ensure this event goes ahead without a hitch, especially Keith who coordinates with all the petting zoos, Jen, Betty, Elaine, Alison, Rebeka and Jillian who man the Tombola and answer queries on the day.
Time for a new challenge, who knows what lies ahead?
