Aycliffe Amateur Boxing Club entered four boxers into the National Development Championships which started on the 24th September at Boldon Colliery.
The first day, super heavyweight, Mattie Hindhaugh, won against Mark Metcalf from Spennymoor Boxing Academy and the next weekend he lost against Cameron Robson from Mainsforth ABC and left the competition.
The next to leave the competition was Hal Stephenson at the quarter final stage in Liverpool. And that left two to go forward to the semi-final and finals weekend, 20th to 21st October in Cannock, Stafford. Meka Stannard, 15 years old and attends Greenfield Academy, boxed a very strong girl from Hampshire and Isle of Wight and overcame her opponent in the second round and the referee stopped the contest to save the Hampshire girl from further punishment.
Reece Smith was disappointed when his opponent pulled out of his semi-final and had to wait for the day after in the national final. Reece had a limited, but strong, opponent who spoiled the contest by holding every chance he got, Reece ended the championship with a silver medal.
Meka Stannard boxed earlier in the day against a girl from Kent in the final and totally outclassed her to bring home the gold.
Aycliffe Boxing Club would like to say well done to all four of them and that we are proud of your achievements.
