Cleethorpes Town 2 v Newton Aycliffe 0
Saturday 14th October
Northern Premier League
Division One East
Newton Aycliffe fell to defeat in an away encounter against Cleethorpes Town. In a game where notable chances were infrequent, two very similar goals from Cleethorpes’ Brody Robertson proved the difference.
The first half was, in all honesty, a very poor watch, with throw-ins and free kicks for niggling fouls occurring often. Both sides could get into decent positions but wide shots, particularly for the home side, were frequent. Brody Robertson and Will Annan had chances, and Cleethorpes had a plethora of corners they couldn’t capitalize on.
Cieran Jackson was probably the most active player in the first half for Aycliffe. Cole Kiernan and Jack Clarkson also had chances but nothing truly challenged Cleethorpes’ James McKeown. The first half ended with Jackson firing a shot straight into the keeper’s hands.
The second half still wasn’t the most entertaining contest, but Cleethorpes finally broke through, Brody Robertson got on the end of a cross and fired a low shot past Daniel Cameron to make it 1-0. The remainder of the game was still not too noteworthy, with set pieces and throw-ins becoming even more frequent. The last notable moment, from an Aycliffe viewpoint, would be Cieran Jackson getting fouled in the box late on, but the referee did not believe it was a penalty.
Cleethorpes’ few attacks in the second half all seemed built around Curtis Bateson trying to feed the ball to Brody Robertson at close range, and that tactic finally pulled off when Bateson did find Robertson to make it 2-0 in the 90th minute.
Newton Aycliffe’s next game is a long trip to Derbyshire to face league leaders Belper Town on Saturday the 21st.
Aycliffe return to the SecuriCorp Stadium on Friday 27th for a rescheduled game against long time Northern League rivals Consett AFC. That game has been brought forward to give Aycliffe supporters another taste of Friday night football.
