St. Francis

St Francis was known for his love of nature, particularly his love of animals. I think all of us empathise with that! Historians believe he was born over 840 years ago, in either 1181 or 1182, in Assisi which is now part of Italy. St Francis believed that nature was the mirror of God. He called all creatures his ‘brothers’ and ‘sisters’. There are stories of him preaching to the birds and speaking with wolves. He spread the word of God during the wars of the Christian crusades, dying in Assisi on October 3rd, 1226, aged around 44. He was made a saint, on July 16, 1228. His feast day is October 4th.
Last week, the Y3’s at St. Francis’ Junior School taught us all about St Francis, who our school is named after. They made us realise how lucky we are to be named after such an important, special saint. Well done Year 3, after 4 weeks in school you have learnt a lot about St Francis and were so brave delivering our first class assembly this year!
