AN after school club that gives budding engineers an insight into their future career has been hailed as a flying success by teachers and training bosses.
S.W. Durham Training (SWDT) has teamed up with Woodham Academy in Newton Aycliffe to run Flight Club, a 12 week programme in which students have the chance to learn about aerodynamics and engineering.
The club is designed specifically for those in years 9 and 10, and aims to get young people exposed to a manufacturing and engineering environment in a fun and creative way. It is hoped that students who attend Flight Club will be inspired to pursue a career in engineering, gaining a better insight into the sector during their time at SWDT.
Colin Walsh, fabrication and welding instructor of SWDT and vice chairman of Teesside Model Flying Club and Air Show Director with 34 years’ aero modelling experience, said: “Flight Club has been a great success so far, and the students that have taken part have really enjoyed it. We have seen some real engineering talent from some of the students, and it is exciting to think that some of them may well be the engineers of the future.
“Quite often, people have an outdated view of what an engineering environment is like, and the reality is very different. We were keen to engage with the next generation of manufacturers and engineers early, and show them that this sector is modern, cutting edge and exciting – and one they could enjoy working in.”
During the programme, students have built two radio controlled model aircraft – one powered by an electric motor, the other by a two-stroke engine – which has involved the design and build of the craft using various hand-tools, traditional skills and engineering techniques.
Nick Pearson from Woodham Academy, said: “Everything the students have learned at Flight Club has certainly enhanced their skills and knowledge, as well as giving them hands-on experience of manufacturing and engineering.
“It can be difficult when students are approaching the end of school, when they will soon have to make decisions about their future and are often unsure of which path they want to take. Flight Club has helped a number of our pupils decide that a career in engineering is for them. They’ve thoroughly enjoying it.”
The work produced by students at Flight Club was showcased at Teesside Model Flying Club’s Annual air show. The club was formed in 1965 and is now the largest of its kind in the North East with more than 150 members.
Flight Club members will be treated to lessons to allow them to fly the aircraft they have built.
