Scarlet Dunn from School Aycliffe took her first steps into motor sport last weekend when she drove a ‘Bambino’ 50cc racing go kart at Sunderland’s Warden Law circuit. Scarlet, 5 years old is a pupil at Aycliffe Village School, daughter of Amanda Dunn one of Britain’s most successful female racing drivers. Amanda has over 50 race wins and 3 National and one European single seater Championship titles to her name (against an all male grid) in her 20+ year career.
Her Father, Anthony Dunn is also a National and European Sportscar champion and driver coach for McLaren Automotive and is currently winning races in the Lotus Cup in the UK.
Both started their motor sport careers in karting and the pair met at Silverstone where they worked as instructors.
“We’re so proud of Scarlet, she did great!” said Mam. “She took to it like a duck to water and soon got the hang of the racing lines. “It’s quite a challenge for any youngster to drive a proper 2 stroke kart first time” said Dad “so I’m glad she enjoyed it”.
The kart was prepared by Scarlet’s Grandad Ron Whitaker who was also a racing driver in the 1970’s! They plan more outings for Scarlet over the forthcoming months.
