A multimillion-pound recycling centre in County Durham has been named top of the tips after it scooped a national excellence award.
Stainton Grove Household Waste Recycling Centre, in Barnard Castle, beat off competition from across the country to secure the prestigious Household Waste Recycling Centre of the Year honour at the letsrecycle.com Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management 2020.
Judges were impressed by the creativity and innovation of the newly refurbished site, which is run for Durham County Council by HW Martin Waste Ltd and opened its doors with a fresh new look on 11 March 2019, replacing the former recycling centre.
The facility boasts the council’s only trade waste facility, allowing businesses to dispose of their waste legally and safely. It’s also now home to an innovative Reuse shop which sees items, too good to throw away but left at the site, take on a second life.
The £3million site is bigger and far more customer friendly than the previous facility and boasts more recycling skips, making it easy for Teesdale residents to recycle items.
HW Martin Waste Ltd worked hard to support the council with the facility’s design and development.
Cllr Brian Stephens, Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and local partnerships, said: “We’re delighted that the fantastic facility at Stainton Grove has been recognised for the innovative ways it helps residents to dispose of their waste.
“It is important that we encourage people to recycle as much as they are able to and having an award-winning site such as this in one of our communities makes that much easier.”
It is the 17th year for the awards which, this year, had to be held virtually due to coronavirus.
